Evidence is presented supporting the identification of a discrete, wellâpreserved air fall deposit generated by explosive volcanism on Mars. Discovery of the explosive eruption of Hecates Tholus provides more evidence of recent Mars rumblings. Hecates Tholus: Hecates lies on northeast margin of the Elysium high. The Hecates HRSC images were obtained on orbit 32 on 19 January 2004, with the color channels imaging at 100 m/pixel. Today's VIS image shows part of a crater located north of Hecates Tholus. To the left, the surface is covered by colorful lava flows rich in sulfur. Please see the THEMIS Data Citation Note for details on crediting THEMIS images. The volcanoes Hecates Tholus, Elysium Mons and Albor Tholus can be seen going from north to south (top to bottom) in this image. This is the first time I can remember being able to resolve Hecates Tholus in my imagery, so I was happy to capture this volcano. Relative Size/Frequency Distribution Plots of Hecates Mons (HM) and Biblis Patera (BP) ⢠⢠â¢â¢ 57 20. Hectas Tholus is 160 by 175 kilometers (100 by 109 miles) in size with a caldera complex 11.3 by 9.1 kilometers (7 by 5.7 miles) in size⦠Crater counts indicate a very young age in the range of several million years only. Stretched RGB color image of Hecates Tholus obtained by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on the ESA Mars Express orbiter. For the snail genus, see Tholus (snail). The slopes of the volcano are heavily dissected with channels, suggesting that the volcano is composed of easily erodible material such as volcanic ash. Geomorphic mapping revealed that the three volcanic constructs within Elysium Planitia (Hecates Tholus, elysium Mons and Albor Tholus) are very different in their overall morphology and represent three distinct types of martian volcano. (a volcanic region on Mars) Elysium Planitiais the second largest volcanic region on Mars. It is also an interesting coincidence ... Elysium and Hecates Tholus do shine as well and to the contrary of Tharsis, this is the best time to detect them. The caldera of Elysium Mons has a diameter of about 14 km and does not show lava flows starting directly at ⦠It is has a summit caldera com-plex (~12 x 9.5 km) and its flanks are etched with rilles of varying size and morphology. Fig. Hecates Tholus is 180 km across and 4.8 km high. It has base dimensions of 420 by 500 by 700 kilometers (260 by 310 by 435 miles) and rises 13 kilometers (8 miles) above the surrounding plains. Discovery of the explosive eruption of Hecates Tholus provides more evidence of recent Mars rumblings. The Elysium volcanic complex is about 2,000 kilometers in diameter and consists of three main volcanoes, Elysium Mons, Hecates Tholus, and Albor Tholus. The radial grooves in the ejecta blanket are still visible around the crater rim. We present results of crater size-frequency distribution (SFD) analysis of the lower NW flank of the Hecates Tholus volcano, Elysium volcanic province of Mars, by the use of images acquired by the Context (CTX) instrument on board of Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (6 m/pixel in resolution). The eruption of Pele on Jupiter's moon Io. properties (the degree of cementation and particle size distribution of the surfaoe, stratigraphic relationships, and microtopography) of the volcano Hecates Tholus in order to better define its eruptive history, and ( 5) to study stratigr.tphic sections of the boundary arp that separates Elysium Mons They are formed from pyroclastic (volcanic) activity. The plume fallout covers an area the size of Alaska. Discovery of the explosive eruption of Hecates Tholus provides more evidence of recent Mars rumblings. In planetary geology, a tholus (pl. In December, members of the same research team revealed that calderas on five major Mars volcanoes were repeatedly active as little as 2 million years ago. 19. The relief of Hecates is about 6,000 m and the relief of Albor is only about 4,000 m, because Hecates is on the edge of the rise whereas Albor is on it. Today's VIS image shows a portion of Buvinda Vallis, a channel near the flank of Hecates Tholus. The Elysium volcanic complex is about 2,000 kilometers in diameter and consists of three main volcanoes, Elysium Mons , Hecates Tholus , and Albor Tholus . Three papers in this issue present the evaluation of the first six months of data from the high-resolution stereo camera on board ESA's Mars Express probe. Hectas Tholus is 160 by 175 km (100 by 109 mi) in size with a caldera complex spanning 11.3 by 9.1 km (7 by 5.7 mi). Elysium Mons is the largest volcano in this region. With elevations of 4.1 km of Albor Tholus and 4.8 km of Hecates Tholus, the other two volcanoes are much lower in elevation (Plescia, 2007). The shield volcano Elysium Mons lies about 250 miles south near the image center, and farther south lies another dome-shaped volcano, Albor Tholus, with a broad summit basin or caldera. The Elysium group of volcanoes is thought to be somewhat different from the Tharsis Montes, in that development of the former involved both lavas and pyroclastics . Hecates Tholus (32.12°N, 150.24°E) is a shield volcano of the Elysium volcanic province of Mars, at tropical latitude ().This volcano shows a complex evolution with spatial interaction of tectonic, magmatic and water-related activity (e.g., Mouginis-Mark et al., 1982, Neukum et al., 2004, Hauber et al., 2005, Williams et al., 2005, Fassett and Head, 2006, Fassett and Head, 2007, Kangi, 2007). Explosive eruptions about 350 million years ago created depressions on the flanks of the volcano Hecates Tholus, according to a study led by Ernst Hauber of the German Aerospace Center. After degradation of ancient cratered terrain within the northern lowlands, volcanic rocks erupted from Elysium Mons, Hecates Tholus, and Albor Tholus ⦠Mean ATI values are related to the mate-rials forming the floor of the depression, and their spatials pattern also seems to reflect terrain structures. Figure 9: Image by Paulo CASQUINHA, showing shiny Elysium and Hecates in RGB close to opposition day tholi) is the term used to describe a small domical mountain or hill. Tholus or tholi are present on the surface of Mars. This color composite was made using the infrared, green, and blue channels. We suggest the Province elevation increased as magma rose from the Martian interior; then the Hecates Tholus volcano increased in size; followed by the growth of Elysium Mons, the largest volcano in the Province. Although our simulation predicts the accumulation of ice only on the flanks of the largest mountains, it is likely that this process occurred at smaller scales not resolved by our model, like on the subgrid-size Hecates Tholus near Elysium, where recent glacial deposits have been observed . Bright clouds hover near the northern most dome-shaped volcano Hecates Tholus. Hecates Tholus was found to possess the most likely possible example of a young, explosively generated, air fall deposit, while the volume of magma erupted from Elysium Mons appears to have been orders of magnitude larger than that erupted from Albor Tholus. Figure 9 features a nearâopposition image from 2007. A smaller volcanic center lies several thousand kilometers west of Tharsis in Elysium . In December, members of the same research team ⦠⦠Albor Tholus, the southern-most of the Elysium volcanoes, is 150 km in diameter and 4.1 km ⦠Mediumâsized telescope would be able to catch this. Its northwest flanks have been partially buried by lava flows from Elysium Mons. Hecates Tholus volcano, probably due to the fine-grained mantle deposits described and mapped in the area [5][8]. Hecates Tholus is 180 km across and 4.8 km high. The result was a small upwelling in the area in the northern hemisphere now called Elysium, and a complex of at least three volcanoes, including Elysium Montes, Albor Tholus and Hecates Tholus.
